Buying Livestock for your Smallholding
This little piggy stayed home,
This little piggy had roast beef,
This little piggy had none,
And this little piggy cried,
Wee, wee, and wee, all the way home.
Fatteners
Pigs are the true joy of the farm yard, they are inquisitive and happy to see a feed bucket, they are loud and empty pigs make the most noise. The pig’s main business is to eat, drink, sleep and grow fat and every smallholding should have a couple fattening. The best place to buy your young pigs is directly from the breeder. Go to the farm, and check the welfare standards. Look at the parents and see if the pigs are friendly and happy. Pigs are social animals and enjoy company. After 10 years of fattening and breeding rare breeds the Oxford Sandy and Black pig is, in our opinion, the very best breed for the smallholder due to its kindly nature and the quality of the carcass. The breed’s recognition as a ‘rare’ breed has increased its popularity but due to the low numbers of pedigree breeding stock registered in the UK the demand is outstripping supply each year.
We have stock available for sale in early spring, February to the end of April and May through to July. This enables the smallholder to buy and rear the young at the best time of the year for weather and for a supply of meat for the autumn. Customers are invited to see our stock before buying.
