our history

Our rare breeds

In our early years of pig keeping we fattened Saddlebacks, Tamworth’s, Middle Whites, Old Spots…. the list goes on. When we made the decision to get into breeding we based it not on commercial grounds but the temperament and flavour of the animal and where the need was. At the time there were only around 35 registered boars and 130 registered sows of the Oxford Sandy and Black breed – indeed they were then classed as a reconstituted breed, only fairly recently were they recognised as a rare breed. So for us the decision was easy.

Today, we have a number of breeding sows and we keep two boars. We are endeavouring to increase our blood lines to help with the preservation of the breed. We also keep a Berkshire Sow and we are growing on one of her gilts for breeding. The Berkshires go out to a boar to be served as we do not currently own our own Berkshire boar. In addition we have two Kune-Kune pigs named Gracie, and Georgie who are of no practical value but who give us all immense pleasure, behaving more like puppies than pigs. next page
